We are a group of students from SST.
Our group comprises of Chiu Jianing, Kho Sock Hui, Megan Kong, Sharmela Castillo. 
Our team wanted to build a machine that would simplify the process
and assist the scientists in getting a sample of the object easily. 
Our project is " The development of the robotic arm"

Although Mark T. mentioned that science available today was not practical long ago, meaning that science has improved, there are still a number of chemicals that the world has yet to discover or observe carefully. Although there are many different contraptions scientists could use to study such matter, the scientists would have to go through many procedures and safety precautions just to get a sample of the chemical to study in the lab. Thus, our team wanted to build a machine that would simplify the process and assist the scientists in getting a sample of the object easily. The scientists have found out that humans cannot touch this substance, but anything else might be able to withstand it. Therefore, they need to reduce the risk of getting harmed. Using the same machine, students and teachers in school could also use it to assist them in science experiments. This machine would thus, make learning for students and teachers much safer and interesting.




Abstract

There is still a numerous amount of poisonous matter that the world has yet to discover or observe carefully as they are unable to come into contact with it using their bare hands. Although there are many different contraptions scientists could use to study such matter, the scientists would have to go through a long list of procedures and safety precautions just to get a sample of the matter to study in the lab. Our project aims to create a robotic arm that is able to pick up the unidentified matter which could have harmful substances present thus keeping the user safe. The user would be kept at a far distance away which makes it safer than risking the amount of contact with the user in a suit. People might have thought of a scanner, however a scanner would not be able to detect the chemicals clearly and accurately. Also, this would involve the user to come into close contact to the harmful chemicals which does not make it entirely safe. The robotic arm is strong and will not be easily damaged as its claws would be wrapped with anti-chemical materials such as latex sheets making it able to resist the harmful substances. With this robotic arm, the risk of getting harmed by unknown chemicals would be greatly reduced. Users could use this machine to pick up the objects which may contain harmful substances and control it such that it is placed where needed. Using the same machine, students and teachers in school could also use it to assist them in science experiments which involves contact with such harmful substances. This machine would thus, make laboratory activities for students and teachers much safer. However in our project, the robotic arm failed to function due to the front part of the arm drooping. As calculated by moment, since the perpendicular distance of the shoulder to the base is shorter than the perpendicular distance from the claw to the shoulder, it will result in a greater clockwise moment than anti-clockwise moment.
